Point slope form is a way of writing a linear equation when you know a point on a line and how steep the line is.

Point Slope Form

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

This linear equation is best when you know both a point and a slope of a line . For example if:

Point

(4,3) and Slope

1/2, we write the equation like this

y - 3 = 1/2(x - 4)

The 4 and the 3 are from the point and the 1/2 is from the slope.

Things to remember about Point Slope Form.

1. The letter m represents slope.
2. The y1 and the x1 are the numbers from a point.
3. The x and y are variables.

1. Find the slope. If you forgot how, look at your notes on slope.
2. Write an equation in point slope form using the first of the two points
3. Distribute the slope through the parenthesis.
4. Get y by itself.
